Civil War – Lee Surrenders

April 9, 1865

Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. During the Battle of Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Lee tried to retreat, but realized he was surrounded by heavy troops and had no choice but to surrender.
