North Dakota becomes the 39th U.S. state. Its name comes from the Dakota territory, which was named for the Dakota or Sioux Native American tribes, whose name for themselves translates to “friend” or “ally”. South Dakota was also admitted on this day, with it becoming the 40th U.S. state.
