November 17, 1968…..

Fans on the East Coast missed the last-minute thrilling comeback by the Oakland Raiders when the final 1:01 of the game was cut off due to the start of the movie Heidi. The New York Jets were leading the Oakland Raiders 32-29 when airing of the game was cutoff. During this time Oakland scored two touchdowns in nine seconds to come from behind and win 43-32. This led to changes in how television handled preempting shows when games ran long.

A Christmas Story…..

The movie A Christmas Story premieres. Ralphie gets a Red Ryder air rifle and “The Old Man” wins a major award in this collection of semi-fictional anecdotes based on Jean Shepherd’s 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.

Edsel Discontinued…..

The Edsel automobile is discontinued by Ford. With fewer than 100,000 sold since its 1957 introduction, it is one of the most famous examples of bureaucratic failures in U.S. industry.
