Bill establishing the draft lottery is signed by U.S. President Richard Nixon in response to the Vietnam War.
The draft applied to men born between January 1, 1944, and December 31, 1950 (males aged 19 to 26). This version the lottery was a change from the previous “draft the oldest man first”. The first Vietnam draft call was held on December 1. The last Vietnam draft call was in 1972.
