Jefferson Davis, in what he later described as “the saddest day of my life,” resigns from the U.S. Senate and returns to Mississippi, following its succession from the Union earlier that month. He became president of the confederacy the following month. Davis had previously served as U.S. Secretary of War (1853-57).
